Personal finance education

Personal finance education (PFE) is a programme of learning opportunities and experiences designed to increase the financial capability of all pupils from every social and cultural background. The Government's long term approach states that all young people should have "access to a planned and coherent programme of personal finance education, so that they leave school with the skills and confidence to manage their money well".

Because schools are encouraged to design their own curriculum, provision for PFE varies from school to school.  It might include activities in specific lessons such as Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), planned content in other subjects such as Maths, learning opportunities across the curriculum such as discussing foreign currency in modern foreign languages, whole school activities such as a 'money challenge' day, or learning more about personal or business finance from contact with an external contributor. Real life experiences relating to personal finance provide relevance for learning.

With revisions to the curricula across the home nations, the topic of PFE has been raised, or is set to be raised, to a new level of prominence across the UK.

Why is this important for Number Partners?

As Personal finance education becomes more prevalent in schools, it will become increasingly important for Number Partners to be aware of what it involves. Teachers may encourage volunteers to focus on games revolving around money and budgeting, for example.
