Primary PFE in England
The non-statutory guidance on Personal, Social and Health
Education recommends teaching about money in both Key Stage 1 and
Key Stage 2.
The programmes of study for Mathematics at both key stages also
state that money should be used as a context to help pupils
understand mathematical methods.
Guidance produced by the former Department for Education and
Employment (DfEE) in 2000, entitled 'Financial capability through
Personal finance education' is helpful in planning lessons and
activities in primary education.
While financial capability does not have a high profile in the
current primary curriculum, the curriculum has recently been
revised by a team led by Sir Jim Rose and a final report published.
Financial capability is included as an integral part of developing
children's mathematical understanding as well as their personal
development.
Implementation of a revised primary curriculum will begin from
September 2011.
